What Makes Singapore Most Expensive City In The World?

Singapore

After a due survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit on expensive cities in the world, Singapore was crowned the most expensive city for the third year in a row – from 2015 till date.

Singapore is an island city-state in southern Malaysia known as a global financial center with a tropical climate and multicultural population. The cost of living in the city seems ridiculously high but I guess the people are used to it, otherwise, what choice do they have?

The criteria for dupping Singapore most expensive city in the world is calculated by the following items and utilities across its 133 cities: food, drink, clothing, household supplies and personal care items, rent, transport, utility bills, private schools, domestic help, and recreational costs.

All of these were used to build up an idea of how much it costs to live in a place.

Costs of transportation in Singapore are reportedly 2.7 times higher than in other expensive cities like Hong Kong or New York. Almost nothing is free in Singapore, not even public charging ports in MRT stations.
Boarding a cab can cost as much as $197 for far as 31.74 Km (from Sentosa to Woodland). Other items normally considered affordable in other cities are costly in Singapore. The list of what makes this Island city-state could be endless but here are a few breaks down:

  • Most expensive manicure/ pedicure – close to $1259 for almost 1.5 hours session.
  • Most expensive cocktail in Asia – a cocktail at Pangaea is most luxury and is sold at $32000 with the name of the Jewel of Pangaea.
  • Overpriced iPhones – as high as $1000 for a warranty.
  • Expensive food: a snack like a doughnut sold in Malaysia for $7.7 is worth $23.70 in Singapore.
  • Most expensive housing – prices of a flat have reached almost $1.05 million, beyond the limit of the average income person.
  • Most expensive certificates – the cost of a certificate of entitlement (COE) is worth as high as $60000 (almost $6000 per year).
