With global warming threatening the core existence of humans and other life forms on our planet, and the clear understanding that at the fore of global warming is fuel, many countries around the world are already banning gas-powered vehicles. They are gradually being replaced by electric-powered cars.

Already, Ethiopia has banned the importation of fossil cars into the country in 2024. Here are some others that are not only banning the importation of gas-powered cars but are banning them completely by 2050.

1. Singapore (2025 to 2040)

Singapore has already banned the use of all non-electrified cars in the public sector since 2023. In 2025, it has indicated that it is banning the sale and registration of diesel-only cars and taxis as well as Non-electric cars. It is expected that from 2030 to 2040, all petrol and diesel vehicles will be phased out from the country’s roads.

2. Norway (2025 to 2025)

Norway has already passed a law that all passenger cars using petrol and diesel will be banned from the country in 2025. Commercial vehicles are given the grace until 2035.

3. Iceland (2030)

This country is also banning the sale of cars that run exclusively on diesel and petrol by 2030. However, this will not include regions where it will be difficult to ban petrol or diesel cars.

4. Israel (2030)

Israel is also among the countries banning gas-powered vehicles. It passed legislation on a climate plan that will have the sales of non-electric cars and importation banned in the country by 2030.

5. Pakistan (2030)

Through the National Electric Vehicles Policy, Pakistan has also made it clear that it is banning the sale of fossil fuel-powered cars from 2030 and booth the sale of electric vehicles up to 90 percent by 2004.

6. Taiwan (2030 to 2040)

The government of Taiwan has also proposed an adventurous law to ban the sale of gasoline-powered scooters and vehicles. The banning of the former will begin by 2035 while that of the latter is starting by 2040. Also, public fleets are expected to go electric by 2030.

7. India (2034 to 2040)

India has a government plan and being a signatory to the Glasgow Declaration, the country is banning the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2034 to 2040.

8. Canada (2035)

Canada also has plans to ban the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035. The country is opening its doors to electric or hydrogen-powered cars which are expected to make up at least 20 percent of new car sales by 2026, 60 percent by 2030, and then 100 percent by 2035.

9. Chile (2035)

Yet another of the countries banning gas-powered vehicles by 2035 is Chile. The country has made it clear that starting from 2035, it will move to battery-electric cars, as it aims to shun internal combustion vehicles. It expects that by 2040, the transition should be complete.

10. China (2035)

China has also finished working on plans to phase out fossil-fueled cars by 2035. The country will only allow for electric, fuel-cell, or plug-in hybrid cars.

Interestingly, China has been encouraging its population since 2009 to buy new energy cars, going ahead to give subsidies on such cars. It is thanks to this that almost half of all new energy and electric cars ever made were sold in China.

11. United States (2030 to 2050)

Banning Gas-powered Vehicles

The US government joined other countries in banning fossil-fuelled cars in 2021 through an executive order signed by Joe Biden. The order mandates the US government to begin cutting the purchase of gas-powered vehicles to have a net-zero emission by 2050.

12. Dominican Republic (2040)

Being a part of the Glasgow Declaration and a signatory, the Dominican Republic has passed legislation to ban fossil-fuelled cars.

El Salvador, Ghana, the Holy Sea, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Rwanda, and Morocco are also other signatories to the Glasgow Declaration. Others are Turkey, Ukraine, and Uruguay.

13. Japan (2035)

Unsurprisingly, Japan is also banning the sale of diesel and petrol-only cars indefinitely. While there have been concerns it may collapse the country’s power grid, the government is still pressing on and hard on the plans.

14. Republic of Korea (2035)

In an effort to curb climate change, the government of the Republic of Korea has also given a deadline of 2030 to stop the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered cars.

15. Thailand (2035)

Thailand has also started making efforts towards banning the sale of combustion engines by 2035 during which only electric vehicles will be sold in the Asian nation.

16. United Kingdom (2035)

Also putting in effort to reduce the impact of fossil fuels on climate change, the United Kingdom plans to stop the sale of petrol-powered cars as well as diesel and hybrid cars in the country. This move across the United Kingdom is taking effect from 2035.

17. Vietnam (2040)

Vietnam is putting in the effort towards realizing the end of fossil-fuelled cars in the country. This effort is starting in 2440 when it will ban the assembly and importation of vehicles and motorbikes that run on fossil fuel.

18. Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Sweden, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Lituania, Luxemburg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Belgium

All these European countries are following legislation passed by the European Union in 2035 to ban the sales of new fossil fuel cars and vans by 2035. A majority of the countries will allow for the sale of new vehicles until 2035 while a few others like Italy and the Netherlands will allow it until 2040.
