Mark Zuckerberg is the name the entire world knows when you talk about Facebook, followed by Instagram and WhatsApp.

The tech entrepreneur and philanthropist is an American who is known as the co-founder and CEO of the gigantic social media and networking service company. Mark Zuckerburg became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire in 2007; joined the rank of 100 wealthiest and most influential people in the world in 2010; and continues to rank as the only person under 50 in the list of 10 richest people in the world as of 2018, as well as the only one under 40 in the Top 20 list of World’s Billionaires.

Born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York, Zuckerberg was raised in a medically oriented family; his father Edward Zuckerberg is a dentist and his mother  Karen is a psychiatrist.  He was raised, along with his three sisters –  Randi, Donna and Arielle, in a village in Westchester County called  Dobbs Ferry. His ancestors are traced back to Germany, Austria and Poland.

Zuckerberg’s success journey as a tech guru made him into a billionaire and one of the world’s most influential people. His interest in computers and writing software began from middle school.

It isn’t so surprising to learn that Mark Zuckerburg was a brilliant student in high school who excelled in classes. During his middle school, his father taught him Atari BASIC Programming for a while and later hired a software developer named David Newman to tutor him privately.

Zuckerberg attended Ardsley High School for two years before he transferred to Phillips Exeter Academy, in New Hampshire. While with the school, he won prizes in science subjects, specifically, mathematics, astronomy, physics and classical studies. With a reputation as a programming prodigy, he gained admission into  Harvard University to study psychology and computer science.

However, Zuckerberg dropped out in his sophomore year in order to complete Thefacebook project he launched from his dormitory in 2004. Before then, he settled a lawsuit filed against him by three Harvard seniors who accused him of using their idea. With the intent to return and get his degree, Mark Zuckerberg built the world’s largest social network platform – FaceBook.

On May 28, 2017, he held true to his words to graduate Harvard and receive an honorary degree.

Mark Zuckerberg’s wife, Priscilla Chan (born February 24, 1985) is an American paediatrician and philanthropist from Chinese descent.

As Harvard alumni, the couple met at a fraternity party during his sophomore year and started dated in 2003.  They got married on May 19, 2012, at Zuckerberg’s backyard in an event that also celebrated her graduation from medical school; had their first daughter Maxima Chan Zuckerberg on December 1, 2015, and welcome their second daughter August arrived on August 28, 2017.

Priscilla Chan grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts and graduated high school as the “class genius.” After graduating with a BA in biology at Harvard in 2007, Priscilla Chan taught science at the private non-profit Harker School for a year, before entering medical school at the University of California, San Francisco to study pediatric in 2008. She graduated in 2012 and completed her residency in the summer of 2015.

The family lives a low-profile life in their home in Palo Alto, California and running the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth is estimated at more than $62.1 billion as of 2019. This is quite a huge plunge from a net worth $71 in 2018, a brutal year in which Facebook was slammed with allegations of data breaches and multiple government investigations into the company’s practices.

Nevertheless, Zuckerberg remains on the top 10 list of world’s billionaires, owing up to 17% of the Facebook stock according to Forbes. He joined other billionaires including Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to pledge the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.

In 2020, Zuckerberg’s wealth skyrocketed making him a centibillionaire, that is, someone who is worth at least $100 billion. He achieved such milestone after shares in the social network surged, as reported by cnn business.

Zuckerberg has splurged some of his millions into real estate, purchasing houses in different locations including Hawai and California. He also owns a 5,500-square-foot townhouse in San Francisco which he bought in 2013 for an undisclosed amount and spent over $1 million in renovations of the kitchen area and inclusion of a green

The Facebook CEO purchased a 393-acre property in Kauai, Hawai; a Kahu’aina Plantation with a white-sand beach. According to Zuckerberg, he and wife Priscilla bought the property in order to preserve its natural beauty.

Mark Zuckerberg’s house in Palo Alto is worth $7 million and currently, reside there with his wife and kids. The home has five bedrooms and bathrooms; an outdoor pavilion with a fireplace, a breakfast bar in the kitchen, a spa, a pond with a waterfall and a custom-made artificially intelligent (AI) assistant.

He bought the house in 2011 and by 2012 and 2013, he purchased four homes surrounding the property for a reported $43.8 million.

According to a CNN report, the construction plans indicate that the New York native planned to demolish the properties and rebuild them to 20% smaller than their original size. This was also a move to create more privacy for his family but Palo Alto’s Architectural Review Board is yet to approve of the plan.
