Kim Mathers is the former wife of American rapper, Eminem. She is also the mother of two of his children and the topic of some of the rapper’s most vile songs.
A teenage sweetheart of the rapper whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, Kim has been through a lot in the past few years having survived some personal tragedies including the loss of her mother and twin sister. She now lives a quiet life in Michigan, United States.
Kim was born and raised in Michigan
Kim was born Kimberly Ann Scott on January 9, 1975 in Michigan. She was born together with her twin sister, Dawn Scott to Kathleen Sluck in Warren.
There has never been mention of who her biological father might be. In fact, there have been suggestions that she had probably never met him as he was probably out of their lives since Kim and her twin sister were babies.
She had a very difficult childhood that forced her and Dawn to leave home as teenagers to escape abuse at the hands of their alcoholic stepfather. The sisters moved to Detroit where they settled in at a youth shelter.
Kim Mathers and Eminem met when they were young teenagers
Eminem and Kim were still kids when the couple first met. Kim was a girl 13 while the rapper was 15. According to Eminem, he was they met for the first time at a house party in 1988.
He revealed that he was standing on top of their coffee table only for him to turn and see her at the door smoking. Soon afterward Eminem, who was still referred to as Marshall at the time, took Kim home because she needed a place to stay.
Kim lied to Marshall’s mom, Debbie Nelson, that she was 15 years old at the time and because of her looks, Debbie had no reason to doubt her. She was happy to accommodate the homeless girl. That was how the relationship between Eminem and Kim began.
Eminem soon dropped out of school to pursue a career as a rapper, and together with Kim, they had a fallout with Debbie who threw them out of the house.
Kim and Marshall became homeless and welcomed a daughter
After they became homeless, Kim and Eminem took to odd jobs and found a home for themselves in a neighborhood that was crime and drug-infested.
Amidst their struggles, Kim became pregnant and on Christmas Day of 1995, the par welcomed their only child, Hailie Jade Mathers.
The arrival of their daughter forced them to return to Eminem’s mother’s place, but the stay was cut short because of Debbie’s state. She was now doing so much drugs which made her temper very short. This report, although maintained by Eminem, was vehemently denied by Debbie.
Eminem worked so hard to give his family a better life but the pressure of fatherhood did not make things easy for him. This tolled his relationship with Kim, leading to many breakups and reconciliations.
Kim Mathers and Eminem got married twice
By 1999, Eminem had started gaining some recognition for his music and although his relationship with Kim had no guarantees, the couple still tied the knot for the first time on June 14, 1999.
After they got married, Em’ was out on his first tour and according to Kim, the fame changed him as his Ego went high. She revealed that she was told she was lucky that he still talked to her.
Their marriage suffered a terrible hit when Kim witnessed her husband perform a song he wrote about her, Kim, a song in which he used foul language on her, claimed she cheated on him, claimed he cheated on her, and sang about making her bleed. This was too much for Kim and it got her to cut her wrist.
The marriage came to an end in 2001. The pair remained divorced for five years and then in 2006, they were back together and they got married in that same year. Not long after that, they went their separate ways in divorce.
According to Kim, their relationship was destroyed the second time as a result of Eminem’s addiction to sleeping pills. On his part, the rapper said although they decided to give their marriage a second chance, they soon realized that a wedding couldn’t fix the problems they were having.
The couple had two children
Although their marriage only produced a child, Hailie Jade. Hailie Jade Scott Mathers was only 4 years old when her parents divorced. She remained with her dad who raised her as a single dad away from the limelight.
Kim also had a second child, Whitney Mathers with an ex, Eric Hartter. Whitney who has since transitioned to Stevie Laine was born in 2002. Whitney also became Eminem’s child as the rapper adopted her when she was still a little child.

Today, Kim is living a very quiet and private life in Michigan where she was born. Having survived many tragedies in the past including her failed marriage twice, the loss of her sister, the loss of her mom, and drug abuse, she has once tried ending her life.
In July 2024, her photos surfaced on the internet, showing her with a facial injury. However, nothing was made known about how she got the injury.
