Malcolm McRae is the husband of Anya Taylor-Joy, the American-British actress renowned for her role in George Miller’s fifth Mad Max film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). He is a musician, actor, and member of the two-person rock band more*, including Kane Ritchotte. The band has released songs such as I Believe You, Really Want to See You Again, and Woman on the Move.

Malcolm McRae was born on April 16, 1994, in Birmingham, Alabama. His father, William Barry McRae, was an investment banker, and his mother, Lesley Wellman McRae, was a freelance fashion designer. He grew up in Birmingham with his brother, Alexander Keene McRae, and his sister, Charlotte Rainier McRae.
Malcolm was accepted into an architecture school but dropped out to follow his passion for music. He enjoyed architecture but found that creativity in the classroom was different from the real world, and he didn’t want to conform to clients’ demands.
After leaving school, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Kane Ritchotte. Together, they formed a musical duo.

On August 24, 2012, Malcolm McRae’s father, William Barry McRae, passed away peacefully at the age of 52 after battling brain cancer. Malcolm was 18 years old at the time.
William Barry McRae had a successful career in finance and served as a managing director at Sterne Agee. He also served on several boards, including the Alabama Ballet, Altamont School, Red Theater Company, and Interfaith Hospitality House. Additionally, he was the president of the Birmingham Venture Club and the Alabama chapters of the Princeton Alumni Association and Schools Committee.
He was born in New Orleans and raised in Birmingham, where he attended the Altamont School, graduating in 1978. He then studied at Princeton University, where he majored in classics and graduated in 1982. Later, he earned a Master of Finance from the Wharton School of Business.

Malcolm McRae moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. At a bar, he met Kane Ritchotte, a former member of the rock band Portugal. The Man, and they quickly connected. Within the first two weeks of knowing each other, they wrote songs daily. Kane then proposed they make it official by creating a record together instead of pursuing separate projects. That’s how more* was founded.
In July 2020, they released their first EP 1/2, which includes five tracks: Settled In, God’s in the Details, Elaborate Attractions, All-American Way, and The Way. A year later, they released a second EP, 2/2, featuring five tracks: Ride Along, Keeping It in the Family, Green, Isn’t That Just Like Me, and Lazy James. All songs from the two EPs were written at the same time.
In addition to the two EPs, McRae and Ritchotte released a video for the song God’s in the Details.
Apart from music, the Alabama-born musician is also involved in acting, though not on a large scale. In 2022, McRae and Ritchotte revealed in an email interview with Coupdemain Magazine that they were cast in a Jeff Buckley biopic, which was set to start filming soon. However, there is no confirmation that the film has been shot yet.
McRae also appeared alongside Ritchotte in the Amazon Prime Video TV series Daisy Jones & The Six as part of the psychedelic ’70s band, The Winters. McRae and Taylor-Joy married on April Fool’s Day in 2022. It was a mostly secret affair and not widely publicized. The wedding was attended by a few guests, including model Cara Delevingne and photographer Sebastian Faena. In October 2023, about a year and a half later, the couple hosted a larger wedding celebration for their friends at the Palazzo Pisani Moretta in Venice, Italy.
Initially, there were rumors that the October celebration was their wedding, but the couple clarified that they actually got married on April 1, 2022.
It’s unclear how long they dated before getting married. Taylor-Joy, who had her breakthrough role in Netflix’s chess drama The Queen’s Gambit in 2020, mentioned being in a relationship in April 2021 but didn’t disclose her partner’s identity. She also went through a devastating breakup before filming Emma in March 2019. According to her, watching Sex and the City helped her cope during that time.
