Biography

Angelina Jolie was born to Marcheline Bertrand who is an actress and Jon Voight an actor on 4th June 1975 in Los Angeles, California and was raised alongside his brother James Haven. She studied at the famous Beverly Hills High school where she was often teased about her modest background and had to be transferred to Moreno High School.

Jolie had traumatic teenage years that range from drug abuse, self-harming to attempted suicide; she did it all. She also struggled with insomnia, eating disorder and suffered a nervous breakdown at 24 which led to her admission into UCLA medical center’s psychiatric ward for 72 hours.

She later regained control of her life and stopped self-harming when she adopted baby Maddox and started caring for him.

Acting career

As noted earlier, Angelina Jolie has been acting since childhood although she started professionally at age 16. She had featured in her brother’s student films as well as several music videos before taking up a leading role in the science fiction movie, Cyborg 2 (1993).

She also acted in Hackers, George Wallace and Gia before winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her movie, Girl Interrupted. Angelina Jolie is also the principal actress in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001).

The A-list actress has continued to spin out blockbuster movies with her films grossing millions of dollars worldwide.

Angelina Jolie Dad

Angelina Jolie’s dad Jon Voight is an accomplished actor with one Academy Award and one Golden Globe award to his name. The 80-year-old has previously been married to Lauri Peters. He married Angelina’s Mum, Marcheline Bertrand in 1971 and they separated in 1976 before finally getting a divorce in 1980.

Jolie’s relationship with her dad throughout her growing years can be best described as being ‘rocky’. It got so bad at a point that she requested the court to remove her father’s last name, ‘Voight’ from her name.

In retaliation, Voight labelled her as being ‘mentally unstable’ in a TV show. This irked her mother and brother so much that they stopped communicating with Jon for many years.

The strain in their relationship originated from the fact that her Dad, Jon Voight abandoned her mother when she was barely one year old. He also had an affair while still married to their mother. There have been some failed reconciliations over the years but father and daughter finally made up in 2007 after the death of her mother from ovarian cancer.

Angelina Jolie Kids

Angelina Jolie

The UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador has 3 biological kids from her marriage to Brad Pitt as well as three adopted kids, bringing their total number of kids to six.

The actress met Pitt on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith and the two were married ten years later.

However, Angelina filled for divorce in September 2016 citing irreconcilable differences. Their single status was restored to them as the divorce was finalized in April 2019.

Her first adopted kid Maddox Jolie-Pitt hails from Cambodia. He was adopted from an impoverished orphanage at 7 months old on March 10, 2002. Maddox obviously adores her mother and walked her down the aisle when she got married to Pitt. He is involved in the movie industry and worked on the movie First They Killed My Father.

Jolie adopted Zahara Marley when she was 6 months old from an Ethiopian Orphanage in July 2015. Their third child Shiloh who is also her first biological child was born in May 2016. Her first picture was sold for a total of $7.6 million and the proceeds donated to UNICEF.

Pax Thien was adopted by Jolie in March 2007 from a Vietnamese Orphanage.

The twins, Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon were born to the actress in July 2008 in Nice, France and the right to their first picture were sold for $14 million making it the most expensive celebrity picture ever taken. The proceeds were donated to the Jolie-Pitt foundation.

Angelina Jolie’s kids are being raised in an unconventional manner – not like every other kid around the block. They are homeschooled and have little contact with kids outside their home. They are required to do humanitarian works and they must learn a foreign language.

Moreover, any religion is accepted in the house; there are no punishments and the kids are not required to perform any chores.

Having been a victim of substance abuse and her ex-husband, that of alcohol abuse, Angelina Jolie’s kids are mandated to swear off alcohol till the age of 21.

Diet

Angelina’s diet involves low-calorie foods and no processed food, with fruits and vegetables. She equally abhors red meat. If she must eat meat, then it has to be lean meat. She enjoys taking soy milk and grains when trying to be in shape for her movies. She also had to give up smoking and alcohol.

Back in 2011, Angelina was accused of being anorexic. She countered her loss of appetite by saying that she was trying to cope with the death of her mother, plus the fact that she was breastfeeding, made her extraordinarily thin.

Recently, the rave was all about how the actress’s kids love eating crickets, spiders and tarantulas. The Cambodians eat these bugs to survive during the time of war, thus it seems Jolie’s household has taken the practice up and eating it as a snack.

Health Challenges

The statement, ‘prevention is better than cure’ is a statement Angelina Jolie takes close to her heart. She is taking proactive measures to reduce her risk of cancer upon discovering that she has a defective gene which predisposes her to cancer.

She has so far undergone a preventive double Mastectomy and a preventive salpingo-oophorectomy. This means she had to remove her breasts and ovaries in order to lower her chances of breast and ovarian cancer respectively.

Joile has been quite vocal about her health choices and is an active advocate of BRCA gene testing. Her enlightenment and the awareness on the issue, has brought about a surge in the number of people going for the test with more people calling for a reduction in the price of the expensive procedure.

This led to the significant reduction of the price in the U.S by a supreme court ruling.
