Every 12th of June ushers Adriana Lima into a new age and marks another cycle in her life because it is the day that she celebrates her birthday.
The Brazilian supermodel who stands at a height of 5ft 9 inches (1.78m), was welcomed into the world on June 12th, 1981 in Salvador Brazil by her parents, Nelson Torres and Maria das Graça Lima. However, Lima’s father abandoned the family when she was six months old, leaving her in the care of her mother.
Interestingly, Lima never set her eyes on modelling as a career, even after she had won some beauty pageants in Elementary school. She went into modelling by chance, after joining a friend who wanted to enter a modelling contest but didn’t want to do it alone. Her picture was then selected by the organisers of the contest who asked her to join the competition. Thus at the age of 15, Lima beat other contestants to become the winner of Fords ‘supermodel of Brazil’ model search and in 1996, became the first runner up in the Fords supermodel of the world contest.
Subsequently, Lima moved to New York City where she signed with Elite Model Management Agency. She began to get numerous job offers and eventually did her first magazine cover job for the September 1998 issue of Marie Claire Brazil.
In 1999, at age 17, Lima walked her first Victoria Secret runway and became a VS angel in 2000. She is still the longest-running Victoria Secret angel till date, having worked with the brand for a period of 19 years before she bid them goodbye during the annual Victoria Secret Fashion show held in November 2018 in New York.
